One Family’s Story
Valencia and her four children had been living in a 3 bedroom apartment which was in deplorable condition. Her friend asked the Homeless Family Center if the agency could give Valencia guidance and help so Valencia would be able to provide for her family. When Valencia arrived at HFC in February she could barely speak.
During her stay at HFC, Valencia attended life skills, budgeting, housing and employment classes. She attributes her success to what she learned in the weekly classes, as well as the daily lessons taught by staff. The strict requirements of saving money, working and going to school prepared her for being independent and successful. Currently, Valencia is pursuing her GED at the Adult Education Program.
As many people experience in this day and age, being a single parent is very difficult. Valencia learned how to handle the demands of being a single parent through sessions taught by case managers at the Center. Valencia’s four children also made significant progress while at HFC. David mainstreamed from Alternative School to Vero Beach Senior High School, Sheena completed the Arbor Education Youth Program at IRSC and both Jordan and John received certificates from the Boys and Girls Club for good behavior. Valencia came back to the Homeless Family Center in September to follow up with her Case Manager. Six months has truly made a positive impact on this family. Valencia was full of smiles as she talked about her new home. “It’s a 4 bedroom HOUSE”, she said, “the kids have a lot more space and I’m sure I can make it, I’ve learned a lot.” A Heartwarming Letter Composed by a young adult, this Christmas day letter reinforces the impact our Center has on families as well as what your support helps to accomplish. Reflections From a Client This piece of prose provides perspective about homelessness.
